Gwendolyn was dozing in her hospital bed.

“Hi, Wendy.”

It was Paul ’s voice, rousing her with an unanticipated smile.

“What’s going on? What’s all this?” she asked, referring to the tubes connected to her.

“You’re losing blood and dehydrated. We’re trying to figure out what’s going on. It’s not like you. You’re healthy as a mare in the field. That’s why I chose you to be the broodmare for my colts and fillies.”

This line had always melted her. Not so much now, but maybe a little.

She hadn’t intended to, but she blurted it out. “Paul Stanley, I was pregnant.”

“What?”

“I was pregnant but . . . now I’m not.”

He looked stricken. “You had a miscarriage? Why didn’t you tell me?”

She knew she had to say it. The burden of the secret was too much. “No, not a miscarriage. I had a procedure.”

He held on a minute to absorb this. Then, “You had an abortion.”

The word spoken out loud made her blanch. Paul Stanley turned around and walked out without saying another word.

Later that day, he returned with the curt declaration, “I want Busby to investigate.”

“Investigate? For what?”

“We have to go in there and see what’s happening.”

“Surgery? Busby?”

“Your bleeding hasn’t stopped.” Paul Stanley said in a strangely cold, clinical way. “It could be serious.”

Gwendolyn took this in, trying to process what he was saying, trying her best to stay away from the muddle of guilty thoughts so she could think clearly. “But, Busby? He’s a urologist, not a gynecologist.”

“It’s not a problem. He’s the only one I trust and I’ll be there, assisting.”

It all sounded so strange to Gwendolyn, but he was the doctor and it never even occurred to her that she could say otherwise.

When she came out of the ether, nestled in the whiteness of her hospital bed, it took her awhile to figure out where she was. It was the sudden awareness of pain in her stomach area that brought her out. She let out a whimper when she saw Dixie sitting next to her. Anyone who knew Gwendolyn would know a whimper from her would be a full-throttle scream from anyone else.

“I’ll be right back, honey,” Dixie said as she rushed out of the room, returning soon with a nurse who immediately gave Gwendolyn a shot. This put her back into a welcomed stupor.

Consciousness returned before the pain. There was Dixie again, sitting in a chair next to her bed.

“Where’s Paul Stanley?” Gwendolyn asked.

“You haven’t seen him? Or Busby?”

“No. Why? Is everything all right? Where are they?”

Dixie muttered something to herself that Gwendolyn couldn’t make out. “What? Is everything okay? What is it, Dixie?”

“You might as well hear it from me.”

Gwendolyn lifted up. “What? Tell me!” The pain knocked her back onto her pillow.

Dixie took her hand. “Honey, you don’t have your parts anymore.”

“My what? My parts? What does that mean?”

“Your woman parts, you know . . .”

“What’re you talking about?”

“Your baby oven, you know. Your uterus, I think it’s called.”

“It’s called a hysterectomy.” It was Paul Stanley’s voice, his clinical one.
